Lilly Pulitzer, one of America’s favorite brands, recently collaborated with Target to bring women and girls her fun fashions for less.  In case you didn’t hear, this created a crazed frenzy of women waiting in line outside of Targets everywhere, well before the doors opened, to make a mad dash inside grabbing and clawing for anything and everything Lilly.  Her bright colors, whimsical designs, and light fabrics are what every southern girl desires and thanks to a friend who is a dedicated Lilly fan, I was able to get my hands on a few items.   While I love when Target collaborates with a high-end designer, I hope Target can work out the kinks in their system offering more than one shipment of items, and secure their website to avoid crashing in the future.  In the meantime, I’m looking forward to Targets next collaboration!

Earlier this year I took a trip to DC both for work and to visit my brother and sister-in-law.  This was my first time up north in the winter and I would not mind if it is also my last.  It was freezing!  However, the weather did not stop me from enjoying the company of my family and friends!  We spent some time in and around Capitol Hill and Chinatown.  Here were a few of my favorite stops!

Going To the Chapel

Ok, before anyone gets too excited, I am NOT going to the chapel anytime soon.  However, I have several friends who are getting ready to walk down the aisle, and with wedding season among us, I thought it the opportune time to do a post for brides.  If you can’t tell from my last posts on the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Mardi Gras, I love to have an event with a theme to dress for.  I think if you are a bride, live it up!  Wear white to every party, shower, and event surrounding your special day!  If white is not your thing, do whatever it is that makes you feel bridal, gives you that flair to set you apart as the bride.  It’s your time to shine!

On a separate note, if you are digging the crop top look but do not have the stomach to wear such fashion, find a faux crop top like this dress, it gives you the cute trendy look without being too revealing.

Laissez les bons temps rouler

In case you are like me and do not speak French, the title is, “Let the good times roll.”  Although I was not in the Big Easy this past weekend, I still love to acknowledge the Mardi Gras season.  After living in Louisiana for five years it’s strange to let it go by without at least ordering a King Cake.  (In my opinion, Broadstreet Bakery in Jackson has the best in town!)

When it comes to Mardi Gras fashion it seems the majority of people have the mindset of “Anything Goes!” but I say, be cute, be colorful (purple, green, and gold!), and be comfortable.  It’s a long day of parade watching, bead catching, and crowd searching.

A little History:  While many people view this holiday as an excuse to go buck wild, it is actually a part of the season of Easter, which is a Christian holiday.  Mardi Gras literally means, “Fat Tuesday,” which was yesterday, a day to prepare for Ash Wednesday, today.  Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the first day of forty to abstain from food or anything that would cause you to be distracted from being obedient to God.  If you practice this belief I would love to hear what you are giving up!

If you are ready to clean out some Mardi Gras beads along with other items in your closet and would like help please contact me for that as well!  In the meantime, laissez les bons temps rouler!!

p32It’s that time of year…The Dixie National Rodeo is coming to town!  If you have never experienced this fun event then it’s time to hop on the wagon train!  (No, really, there’s a wagon train that rolls all over town before landing at the Fairgrounds this Thursday.)  While some girls grew up watching football with their dad, I grew up watching Professional Bull Riding with mine.  I didn’t know names of any coaches or quarterbacks but I could spout out the names of a few cowboys and bulls.  I love having the opportunity to see the action live here in Mississippi!  If you are looking for something to do this weekend, look no further!  Lecile the clown will have you laughing, The Swon Brothers will have you clapping, and the cowboys will have you cheering!

No one can deny that our weather here in Mississippi is crazy.  One day it’s freezing and we have an excuse to pull out our heaviest coat but the next day is sunny and warm enough all you need is a light second layer.  Lucky for us, we have had several of these beautiful days lately.  I love these days to pull out my pieces that are too hot to wear in our Mississippi heat and too thin for our chilling winds.  The combination of this acrylic peach top and lightweight knit and fur vest is the perfect combination for this beautiful weather.

The High and The Low of It

While there are all kinds of charts, quizzes, and how to’s on dressing for your body type, I think the biggest favor you can do yourself is look in a full length mirror before walking out the door.  It amazes me how many people do not own a full length mirror.  Your hair and makeup can only do so much for you, how you dress can do wonders.

Regardless of individual body shapes, a few simple rules can be applied to how you dress.  For instance, the silhouette of the garment should flatter the natural shape and size of your body.  Nothing should cling, pull, pucker, gap or bag across the bust, armholes, sleeves, shoulders, tummy, hips, bottom, or crotch.  Even though oversized looking tops are in style, clothes that are just too big and baggy add pounds.  Keep proportion and scale in mind.

This combination of the cropped jacket with a mini skirt and wedged booties add length to my legs and the giraffe belt not only adds a fun factor but it accentuates my waist line and pulls the color of the skirt and top together.

So, before you walk out the door check and make sure the lines and lengths of what you have chosen to wear elongate your legs or torso, accentuate your best feature, and collaborate to pull together the total look you want.

Holiday High Tea

I get it honest, my mom and I love to host a themed event.  Except, we don’t just throw together a party with decor from the closet and create a Facebook event, we go all out!   When my mom decided to host a holiday high tea between Christmas and New Year I whipped out some invitations, thank you Google Images, and bought a new dress.  My mom on the other hand, whipped out homemade butter scones, raisin and cinnamon scones, coconut cream puffs, fig and blue cheese tarts, and finger sandwiches to go with ten choices of flavored tea or cider, bought an adorable pink feathered fascinator and an outfit to match.  We pulled out the fine china, silver, and crystal, and hit up Home Goods for our finishing touches of fun teapots, a serving rack, and a buffet.

It was a lot of work but it was well worth it.  All our guests showed up dressed in their hat and gloves and some even brought vintage handbags!  Our wonderful guests requested that we make it an annual event!  So, here’s to a happy 2015 and possibly a new Mangrum tradition!
